For Atturo Tire, class is back in session for 2019.
For the second consecutive year, the Chicago-based tire brand is supporting SEMA’s High School Vehicle Build Program, which connects high school automotive shop classes with specialty-equipment manufacturers’ products to build one-of-a-kind customized vehicles. Funded by SEMA, the program offers students real-world, hands-on auto-tech skills and engages them in the accessorizing and customization lifestyle.
“We’re proud to partner again with SEMA this year to help foster and educate the next generation of automotive aftermarket enthusiasts and specialists,” says Atturo Tire Marketing Manager Joe Gomez. “And we’re excited for high school students nationwide to learn more about how Atturo tires can help them Go Their Own Way with first-hand experience at installing tires as part of these aftermarket builds.”
In 2019, the SEMA program’s accessorizing project involves five high schools nationwide, and focuses on suspension, interior and exterior accessories, and wheels and tires with students customizing five Jeep Wrangler TJ under the guidance and instruction of their auto-shop instructors using donated aftermarket products from partnering sponsor companies. Atturo donated the tires for four of the five Jeep builds, with each school receiving five Trail Blade BOSS tires in sizes LT325/60R20 and 37×12.5R17.
The Trail Blade BOSS is the most intimidating tire in Atturo’s Trail Blade off-road series. Designed for hardcore off-road drivers, the tire features incorporates a “kurki”-style knife blade as the oversized tread lug to help battle through deep slop by forcing debris from the center of the tread.
After the vehicles are transformed by the SEMA program students, they will be sold at the end of the school year. Proceeds from the sale will fund the purchase of another vehicle to support a build for the 2020 school year – making the program a self-sustaining one.
To pilot the program in 2018, SEMA partnered with Santa Fe ECO High School in Santa Fe, N.M. Including adding Trail Blade BOSS tires, the school’s auto shop class modified a 2015 4WD Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (pictured), which was then auctioned for $56,175. That money was used to fund this year’s program at Santa Fe ECO, and it’s SEMA’s vision that the program ultimately will expand to reach thousands of high school automotive shop class students across the country.
The schools receiving tires from Atturo this year include Santa Fe ECO High School; Comstock High School in Kalamazoo, Mich.; R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton, Texas; and Santa Ynez Valley High School in Santa Ynez, Calif. Atturo currently has plans for a company representative to visit the students building the Jeeps at Comstock and R.L. Turner high schools.
